# How to add agent analytics to a Java backend

Use the standard Amplitude Java SDK to track a Spring report assistant's tool read and model response. I'll connect each job to its signed-in user and keep message content out of telemetry. Allow about 30 minutes.

- Java 21
- Spring Boot 3.5
- Java SDK 1.x
- 30 min

Spring can read account data and call a model in the same backend that serves your product. [Amplitude agent analytics](https://amplitude.com/agent-analytics) connects that assistant's tool calls and model responses to the users in your product analytics.

In this tutorial, you'll build a Spring report assistant, track its tool read and token usage, and close each job's session when the request finishes. The complete setup is below; [Java product analytics](https://amplitude.com/build/java-product-analytics) explains the shared event-tracking approach in more detail.

`POST /api/assistant/jobs` reads a signed-in user's usage export, asks the OpenAI Responses API to explain it, and returns an answer with a job ID. Amplitude receives `[Agent] User Message`, `[Agent] Tool Call`, `[Agent] AI Response`, and `[Agent] Session End` with shared identity and metadata.

## Prerequisites

- Java 21 and Maven 3.6.3 or later. This page includes a complete Spring Boot 3.5.16 project with Java SDK 1.13.1 and `org.json` 20260814.
- Your application's verified authentication adapter. `HttpServletRequest.getUserPrincipal()` must supply the canonical user ID; optional plan data comes from the matching trusted `VerifiedAccount` request attribute.
- An Amplitude project API key from Settings > Projects > your project > General > Manage next to API Key, and a server-controlled JSON usage export. Each row has `user_id`, `date` in `YYYY-MM-DD` form, and a nonnegative integer `event_count`.
- An OpenAI API key and a text model enabled for your account's Responses API. Model requests use your provider account and its billing.

[Sign up](https://app.amplitude.com/signup) for an Amplitude account to get a project API key.

## 1. Create the project and configure the assistant

I'll use the [standard SDK instrumentation path](https://amplitude.com/docs/amplitude-ai/agent-analytics/instrument-http-api), installing the [Java Analytics SDK](https://amplitude.com/docs/sdks/analytics/java/jre-java-sdk) in this project. It sends the agent events and shares the same canonical identity as product analytics.

Create a project directory, then save these complete files at their labeled paths. Java sources use package `com.example.build`.

**Terminal, new project**

Terminal, new project

```sh
mkdir -p java-report-assistant/src/main/java/com/example/build
mkdir -p java-report-assistant/src/main/resources
mkdir -p java-report-assistant/data
cd java-report-assistant
```

For an existing app, merge dependencies and settings, reuse its entry point and authentication, and preserve routes, flags and other instrumentation. Reuse one analytics client. This page includes the complete setup without requiring another Build tutorial.

**src/main/java/com/example/build/ReportController.java**

src/main/java/com/example/build/ReportController.java

```java
package com.example.build;
import jakarta.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest;
import jakarta.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.GetMapping;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.PostMapping;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RestController;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.nio.charset.StandardCharsets;
@RestController
public class ReportController {
    private final AnalyticsService analytics;
    private final ReportPreview preview;
    public ReportController(AnalyticsService analytics, ReportPreview preview) {
        this.analytics = analytics;
        this.preview = preview;
    }
    @PostMapping("/api/reports/preview")
    public void preview(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws IOException {
        RequestIdentity identity = RequestIdentity.from(request);
        byte[] body = preview.build(identity).toString().getBytes(StandardCharsets.UTF_8);
        response.setContentType("application/json");
        response.setCharacterEncoding(StandardCharsets.UTF_8.name());
        response.getOutputStream().write(body);
        analytics.report("Report Previewed", identity);
    }
    @GetMapping("/healthz")
    public String health() { return "ok"; }
}
```

`RequestIdentity` accepts only the verified servlet principal for the user ID. After verifying an account, your authentication adapter can set `RequestIdentity.VERIFIED_ACCOUNT` to a matching `VerifiedAccount(userId, plan)`. A device-ID header supplies analytics metadata and cannot authenticate a request. Without your verified authentication, the assistant endpoint returns HTTP 401.

The assistant stays disabled until you enable it explicitly. The analytics service is Spring-managed, creates fresh events, and waits for delivery callbacks after graceful HTTP shutdown. It also supports the included report preview route.

Each POST starts a new, synchronous report job. Its server-generated job ID stays with that work through the tool read, model call, and close. All events share Turn ID `1` and one trace ID because this job has one exchange. If your app already persists job records, use their IDs and ownership checks.

A chat needs its persisted conversation ID across requests. Do not turn this endpoint into a chat by giving every message a new session ID. Never reuse a job or conversation ID across users.

This implementation applies `metadata_only` behavior before tracking: no message text, system prompt, tool payload, score comment, or raw exception enters Amplitude events. The provider receives the question and filtered report data to produce its answer. Configure that provider relationship according to your application's data policy.

## 2. Emit metadata for one job

I'll create this object inside the request, so concurrent users share only the analytics client. The shared helper above creates a fresh Java `Event` for each call, including a timestamp and unique `insert_id`, and assigns an incrementing `event_id` to distinguish simultaneous events. Its analytics visit `session_id` stays `-1`. The separate `[Agent] Session ID` identifies this report job.

                .put("[Agent] Parent Message ID", messageId).put("[Agent] Tool Success", success)
                .put("[Agent] Latency Ms", latency));
    }

    void response(OpenAiReportModel.Result result, String requestedModel, double latency, boolean error) {
        JSONObject properties = new JSONObject().put("[Agent] Message ID", UUID.randomUUID().toString())
                .put("[Agent] Model Name", result == null ? requestedModel : result.model())
                .put("[Agent] Provider", "openai").put("[Agent] Latency Ms", latency)
                .put("[Agent] Is Error", error);
        if (result != null && result.usage() != null) {
            var usage = result.usage();

        }

    }

    void end(boolean completed) {
        emit("[Agent] Session End", new JSONObject().put("[Agent] Output State", completed ? "completed" : "failed"));
    }
```
I keep token counts on AI Response and omit unknown cost. The standard Java SDK does not price agent tokens. If you add an accurate provider cost calculation, send `[Agent] Cost USD` on that response only. Do not invent zero cost when pricing is unknown.
**MCP.** Use [Amplitude's MCP server](https://amplitude.com/docs/amplitude-ai/amplitude-mcp) to inspect your project's taxonomy before adding business events alongside these managed agent events.
## 3. Read the signed-in user's usage report
I'll read a server-controlled export and filter it by the verified user's ID. The question cannot select another user or a filesystem path. The tool returns counts for today and the previous six UTC dates, aggregates duplicate dates, and omits identifiers from the data sent to the provider.
**Why.** Authentication alone does not authorize a report read. The user filter stays inside the tool. For a database-backed app, put the same ownership condition in the query and return only that user's rows.
## 4. Call the model over HTTP
I'll call the [Responses API](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/text) once with the filtered report. The application always runs its report tool first; this is a fixed report workflow, with no model-selected function calls.
The adapter reads text from assistant `output_text` items, records the returned model name, and accepts valid token totals when the provider supplies them. It disables response storage with `store: false`, rejects redirects, and bounds the full HTTP future to eight seconds. This setting does not define every part of the provider's retention policy.
    @Override public void close() { http.close(); }
}
```

The returned answer goes to your app, while only metadata reaches Amplitude. Missing or invalid usage stays absent. A failed or incomplete model call records an error response; when the provider supplies valid usage for that failure, it stays attached to the event.

## 5. Add the Spring endpoint

I'll enable the assistant's beans together, reuse the existing verified identity, and keep the report routes intact. Spring closes the HTTP client when it destroys the bean. The configured graceful server shutdown lets active handlers finish before analytics drains its queue.

            completed = true;
        } finally { run.end(completed); }
    }
```
The endpoint rejects anonymous users and client-supplied identity fields. A report-tool failure closes a failed job before calling the model; it does not fabricate an AI Response. A model failure records an error response and closes the job. The final output state is `completed` only after the response write succeeds in the handler; that write does not prove the browser consumed the answer.
The report app also includes this export endpoint. It records a product event through the same analytics service, so preview, assistant jobs and exports share verified identity.
Set `AMPLITUDE_API_KEY`, `OPENAI_API_KEY` and `OPENAI_MODEL` privately through your secret manager or shell. Set `AMPLITUDE_SERVER_ZONE` to `US` or `EU` to match your Amplitude project. Then enable the assistant with the settings below. Set `OPENAI_MODEL` to a text model available to your provider account. Start from the application root so the relative report path resolves correctly.
**Terminal, project root with keys loaded privately**
Terminal, project root with keys loaded privately
```sh
export AMPLITUDE_AGENT_ENABLED=true
export AMPLITUDE_AGENT_ENVIRONMENT=development
export AMPLITUDE_AGENT_REPORT_PATH=data/usage.json
mvn spring-boot:run
```
Save your server-controlled usage export to `data/usage.json`. Its rows use this shape; use your signed-in test account's canonical user ID and a date within the last seven UTC days. The request cannot choose a file path or another user's rows.
**data/usage.json, row format**
```

Send a request through your normal authenticated app session. `APP_COOKIE` below contains your app's existing local session cookie; no `X-User-ID` header can authenticate this endpoint.

**Terminal, authenticated local request**

```sh
curl --fail-with-body http://localhost:8080/api/assistant/jobs \
```

## Verify it worked

Use a current report export whose `user_id` matches your signed-in account. Run one job and check in this order:

1. **Application response:** The endpoint returns an answer and a `job_id`. A signed-out request returns 401 and starts no job. Missing report data returns 503; a provider failure returns 502.
2. **Processed event stream:** In **Users > User Profiles**, find the canonical user ID and open the event stream. Inspect Raw fields for User Message, one successful `read_usage_report` Tool Call, AI Response, and Session End. Keep the product analytics identity on all four.
3. **Correlation:** Every event shares the returned `[Agent] Session ID`, Turn ID `1`, trace ID, and Agent ID `java-report-assistant`. Tool Parent Message ID matches the user-message ID. Each event has its own `insert_id`; token counts appear on AI Response only.
4. **Privacy and usage:** Check that message text, system prompts, tool payloads, and raw errors are absent. Compare the AI Response token totals with the provider response. Unknown cost is omitted; do not expect a session cost value from this recipe.
5. **Agent processing:** Confirm the job groups into one agent session. HTTP 200 from ingestion confirms receipt, so also verify the grouped session. After explicit close, the Session Record typically arrives within 15 to 20 minutes; enrichment backlogs can take longer. Check technical metadata independently of content-based assessments, which have no message or tool text to judge here.

Start a second job and confirm it gets a new session ID. Test with another signed-in account and confirm its report data, user ID, and job session stay separate. For a chat, preserve its thread ID across exchanges and increment the turn once per exchange instead.

## Troubleshooting

### The assistant route returns 404

Set `AMPLITUDE_AGENT_ENABLED=true` and restart. The controller and provider beans are opt-in. Confirm all five classes are under the same component-scan package as `BuildApplication`.

### Startup asks for provider settings

Load `OPENAI_API_KEY` and `OPENAI_MODEL` into the server process before enabling the assistant. Keep provider secrets on the server. The Amplitude project key is a different setting.

### Every request returns 401

Connect your real authentication adapter so the servlet Principal contains the canonical account ID. A browser device ID or `X-User-ID` header supplies no account authorization.

### The report tool returns 503

Check the configured path, JSON structure, matching user ID, and dates in the last seven UTC days. The tool rejects files over 1 MiB, negative or fractional counts, invalid dates, and empty matching reports. Keep the export under server control.

### The provider returns 502

Confirm the key and model work for your provider account. The adapter requires a completed response with assistant text and applies an eight-second deadline. Review your server's provider diagnostics without adding raw errors or payloads to analytics events. Do not automatically retry a paid request after an ambiguous timeout without your application's retry policy.

### Events arrive but the agent session is missing

Confirm Agent ID, session ID, canonical user ID, and project match on every event. Check `[Agent] Session End` for the same session. Ingestion receipt alone does not establish correct grouping.

### The thread has no visible text or a content assessment looks wrong

This implementation omits content before calling `track`. Inspect grouping, tool success, errors, latency, and tokens separately. Content-based quality assessment needs text or your own permitted enrichments; an empty thread does not establish that your application returned an empty answer.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need a separate AI SDK for Java?

This tutorial follows Amplitude's standard Java SDK instrumentation path and emits the managed `[Agent]` event contract. The shared client also handles your product events.

### Is each HTTP request a new agent session?

Here it is, because one request performs and finishes a new report job. A conversation is different: retain its persisted thread ID across messages. Close the session when that unit of work ends; late events do not rerun the completed session's enrichment.

### Does metadata-only tracking keep report data away from the provider?

The privacy choice here controls Amplitude telemetry. The model provider still receives the question and filtered report counts to produce its answer. No message content or tool payload is sent to Amplitude.

### Does Amplitude calculate cost from Java token counts?

Supply known `[Agent] Cost USD` yourself when you have an accurate calculation. The standard event path stores what you send and does not price direct events downstream. This recipe leaves unknown cost absent.

Follow https://amplitude.com/build/java-agent-analytics in a new or existing Java 21/Spring Boot 3.5 report app. Use this page's complete POM, properties and shared application files when starting fresh. For an existing app, merge settings and preserve its authentication, routes and instrumentation. Reuse the shared AnalyticsService and its graceful callback drain. Add the five assistant classes and the included report export controller under the application package. Require the verified servlet Principal, never a body/header user ID. Read a server-configured JSON usage export, filter by that account and seven UTC dates, then make one real Responses HTTP request using server-only OPENAI_API_KEY and OPENAI_MODEL. Create a request-local job/session ID, one exchange trace and Turn ID 1; retain a persisted thread ID instead if integrating with chat. Emit the documented User Message, actual Tool Call, AI Response and Session End events with the canonical user ID and Agent ID java-report-assistant. Keep all content, raw errors and unknown cost out of telemetry; record validated provider tokens on AI Response only. Preserve existing report, flags and export routes. Test isolated users, missing data, provider failures, token totals, shutdown and metadata privacy. Report changed files and processed-event/grouping verification separately from local transport tests.
```
## What this unlocks
[Agent analytics](https://amplitude.com/agent-analytics) groups `read_usage_report` calls and model responses by the report job.
[Product analytics](https://amplitude.com/amplitude-analytics) connects those jobs to `Report Previewed` using the same canonical user ID.
[Feature flags](https://amplitude.com/feature-management) lets you roll out an assistant change to selected users while measuring existing product actions.
[Experimentation](https://amplitude.com/amplitude-experiment) lets you test that rollout against a defined conversion metric when you add an experiment.
