# Create segments

Create a segment in an Amplitude chart's Segmentation Module to narrow results to the users, sessions, or events you want to analyze. By default, every Amplitude chart returns all users who match the chart's event or metric selection. For how filter scope affects results, refer to [About segments](https://amplitude.com/docs/analytics/segments/about-segments#segment-scopes).

## Add a filter to a segment

1. In the Segmentation Module, click **+ Filter**.
2. Select a filter type: a property, **Users who performed**, a cohort, **Sessions**, or a saved segment.
3. Define the condition. For the operators each filter type supports, refer to [Segment operators](https://amplitude.com/docs/analytics/segments/segment-operators).

### Filter types

Each filter type applies at a different scope.

**Property**: Property filters apply to the events associated with the property, so they behave as event-scoped filters. The Segmentation Module labels them **Filter to events where**. For example, if a user triggered events on both Android and Web, a property filter for `Platform = Android` includes only the events that happened on Android.

**Users who performed**: This filter applies at the user level. For example, a user triggered events on both Android and Web. **Users who performed** `Complete Purchase` with count ≥ 1 returns all of that user's events on both platforms in the time range, regardless of which platform the purchase happened on.

**Cohorts**: **Users in Cohort** applies at the user level, or at the group level if you use [Accounts](https://amplitude.com/docs/analytics/account-level-reporting). Use this filter to reuse existing cohorts, or to evaluate accounts that meet a condition even when an individual user didn't. For example, you have a behavioral cohort of `organization_id` values for organizations that completed a purchase, named `Purchasing Orgs L30`. To return all users from organizations that didn't purchase, filter with **In Cohort** of `organization_id` ≠ `Purchasing Orgs L30`. If Acme Corp has five users and one of them completes a purchase, Amplitude excludes all of Acme as a purchasing account.

**Sessions**: This filter applies at the session level and includes all events from sessions that match the condition. For example, **Sessions** where **Contains Event** `Complete Purchase` count ≥ 1 returns every event in the sessions that included a purchase.

**Saved segments**: A saved segment applies at the scope you created it with.

### Combine filter types

When you apply more than one filter type, Amplitude returns the intersection of the filters, like a logical AND.

To view the hierarchy and logic behind a segment, click the pencil icon in the top-right corner of the segment card to open the [advanced segment builder](https://amplitude.com/docs/analytics/segments/advanced-segment-builder). The following illustration shows a segment in a chart next to the same segment in the advanced builder.

![A chart segment with event, session, and user filters shown alongside the equivalent advanced builder containers joined by AND](https://amplitude.com/docs/images/analytics/segments-chart-vs-advanced-builder.png)

In the following example, an event filter keeps `/` page views, a session filter keeps sessions that contain `Complete Purchase`, and a user filter keeps users with at least two purchases. With all three filters on, the segment returns 4 of 25 events: the `/` page views in purchase sessions from users with two or more purchases. Turn filters on and off to see what each one removes.

## Compare segments

To compare groups, click **+ Add Segment** to add more segments to a chart. For example, add one segment for users in Tampa Bay and another for users in Houston to compare conversion rates by market.

## Group a segment by a property

The Segmentation Module can apply a group-by to all selected events and metrics. You can use this option only when a chart has exactly one segment.

## Filter by event time

An Event Time filter matches events by the date and time when they occurred. Use Event Time when a segment should include events from one or more specific periods. Use the chart date picker instead when the same time range applies to the entire chart.

1. Add a property filter.
2. Select **Event Time** from the list of event properties.
3. Select a comparison operator, then enter a date and time. Amplitude interprets the value in your project's timezone.
4. To set both a start and an end, add a second property filter. To include multiple time periods in one segment, use the advanced segment builder and join the periods with OR.

Use `is greater than or equal to` for an inclusive start and `is less than` for an exclusive end. The `is` operator matches one exact instant, not an entire calendar day.

## Paste a list of property values

Instead of selecting property values one at a time, paste a list. Pasting a list helps when you want to include or exclude many values.

1. Copy a comma-separated list of values to your clipboard. For example:

   ```text
   abe@datamonster.com,bebe@datamonster.com,cece@datamonster.com,didi@datamonster.com
   ```
2. Paste the list into the _Search or enter a value_ box.
3. Click **Select All**, then click **Apply**.

> **Note:**
>
> Don't select the freeform value after pasting. Click **Select All** instead.

## Save a segment

To save a segment for reuse, click the options icon on the segment, then click **Create Saved Segment**.

## Set a default segment

To apply the same saved segment to every new chart you create, click **Set as default** next to the segment in the list of saved segments. The default applies only to you.
