## Why most journey maps fail

A journey map drawn from memory is a wish list. Teams sketch out an idealized path — discover, sign up, activate, retain, advocate — populate it with personas they imagine, and ship it to the wall.

Then a real user logs in and does something completely different.

The fix is straightforward: ground every stage of your map in event-level behavioral data. You need to see what users actually do, where they drop off, and how that varies across cohorts. Without that, you're just brainstorming.

## The two categories of journey mapping tools

## A practical journey mapping workflow

Here's a sequence that produces journey maps your team will actually trust.

### 1. Define the journey scope and persona

Pick one persona and one journey. "First-time user activation in the mobile app" beats "the entire customer lifecycle." Tight scope produces useful maps.

### 2. Pull behavioral data first

Before drawing anything, run a funnel analysis in Amplitude (or your event analytics tool of choice) for the journey you're mapping. Identify the actual stages users move through, the conversion rate between each stage, and the median time to complete.

You're looking for the real shape of the journey — not the idealized one.

### 3. Layer in qualitative research

For the biggest drop-off points, run user interviews or session replay reviews. The drop-off shows where the friction is; the qualitative work tells you why.

Now open Miro, Figma, or Smaply and draw the journey using the data you collected. Each stage should have:

- The action the user takes
- The touchpoint (page, screen, feature)
- The conversion rate or completion percentage from your analytics
- The dominant emotion (validated by interviews or surveys, not assumed)
- The friction point or opportunity

Journey maps decay. Re-pull the underlying funnel data quarterly and update conversion rates and drop-offs. A map that hasn't been touched in a year is back to being a wish list.

Map those moments in detail, run user research at each, and prioritize the fix that affects the largest cohort.

Subscription apps need to map both the activation journey (sign-up through first value) and the renewal journey (engagement through retention).
