# Free area chart maker

An area chart is a line chart with the space under it filled in, which makes volume easier to feel. Import a CSV, plot your series, and download or embed the result — free, with no signup.

- Your data never leaves your browser

Drag and drop your CSV

Or paste rows straight from a spreadsheet. Your data stays in your browser — nothing gets uploaded.

## What is a area chart?

An area chart plots values over time like a line chart, then fills the region between the line and zero. The fill gives the quantity physical weight: a growing area feels like growth in a way a bare line does not. That makes area charts the right choice when the amount of something matters as much as its direction — total revenue, total usage, total headcount.

## How to make a area chart

1. ### Import your CSV

Drag and drop your file, browse for it, or paste rows from a spreadsheet. You need a date column and at least one numeric column.

2. ### Confirm the x-axis

The date column is picked up automatically; adjust it in the X-axis dropdown if needed.

3. ### Shape the fill

Plot one series for a classic filled trend, or switch to the stacked area type when several series add to a meaningful total.

4. ### Download or embed

Export a high-resolution PNG or JPG, or copy a self-contained HTML embed for your blog or wiki.

## When to use a area chart

- Trends where the amount matters, not just the direction

- A single metric you want to give visual weight, like total revenue

- Softening a spiky line into something easier to present

When not to: With several overlapping series the fills hide each other. Use a line chart for comparison, or a stacked area chart when the series add up to a meaningful total.

## Charts that update themselves

A chart from a CSV is a snapshot. Amplitude charts read straight from your product’s data — funnels, retention, and trends that stay current without another export. Plans start free.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between an area chart and a line chart?

They plot the same data. An area chart fills the space between the line and zero, which emphasizes how much there is; a line chart only shows the trend.

### When should I use a stacked area chart instead?

When your series are parts of a whole — traffic by channel, revenue by plan — and you want both the total and the mix over time. This tool has a separate stacked area type for that.

### Can I download the area chart as an image?

Yes. Download a high-resolution PNG or JPG, export the data back to CSV, or copy a static HTML embed that works on any page.

### Should an area chart start at zero?

Yes. Because the fill represents quantity, cutting the axis exaggerates change. This tool starts area charts at zero by default; the y-axis min is only worth changing for line charts.

### Can I make the area chart semi-transparent?

Single-series area charts render with a light fill automatically so the gridlines stay visible; stacked areas use solid fills so the segments read clearly.

### Is this area chart maker free to use?

Yes, with no account, no trial clock, and no watermark on anything you export. There is nothing to upgrade to later.

## Why use this chart maker

### Create beautiful charts instantly

Every chart is drawn in Amplitude’s own palette and typography, the same ones behind our product. There is no theme to choose and no colors to adjust, so your data looks presentable the moment it lands.

### No signup or account needed

There is no signup, no login, and no paywall. Your CSV is parsed and charted entirely in your browser, so nothing is ever uploaded to Amplitude or saved on our side. You can chart data you would never paste into a website.

### Download or embed on the spot

Take a high-resolution PNG or JPG for a deck, the cleaned CSV, or a self-contained HTML snippet that drops into a doc or wiki. One click, no export queue.

## Make another kind of chart

Your data carries over, so switching type costs you nothing — no re-importing. Every chart below is drawn by the same tool, in Amplitude’s palette.

-

### [Line chart](/free-chart-maker/line-chart)

The default for trends over time. Use it for metrics like weekly active users, revenue, or signups by month.

-

### [Stacked area chart](/free-chart-maker/stacked-area-chart)

Shows how parts add up to a whole over time, like traffic by channel or revenue by plan.

- ### [Bar chart](/free-chart-maker/bar-chart)

Compares amounts across categories. The right pick when your x-axis is a set of things, not a timeline.

- ### [Stacked bar chart](/free-chart-maker/stacked-bar-chart)

Category totals plus what each one is made of, in a single chart.

- ### [Horizontal bar chart](/free-chart-maker/horizontal-bar-chart)

A bar chart turned sideways. Use it for rankings or when category names are too long to fit under columns.

- ### [Pie chart](/free-chart-maker/pie-chart)

Share of a total at a single point in time. Works best with five or fewer slices, so this pie chart generator groups the rest into “Other” for you.

- ### [Donut chart](/free-chart-maker/donut-chart)

A pie chart with an open center. Same job as a pie, with a lighter look.

- ### [Funnel chart](/free-chart-maker/funnel-chart)

Drop-off across sequential steps, like visit, signup, activation, purchase. The classic product analytics view.

- Weekly actives

  435,500

  Total

  ### [KPI chart](/free-chart-maker/kpi-chart)

Turns each series into a headline number with its total and average, for when the figure matters more than the trend.
