Metric Explorer (Beta)

Beta feature

Use Metric Explorer to:

  • Compare event-based and session-based measurements side by side on the same chart, for example, Add to Carts and Sessions over time.
  • Build and visualize hybrid formulas that combine event and session inputs in one expression, for example, Revenue per Session or Add to Carts per Session.
  • Apply advanced per-metric measurements (rolling average, rolling window, cumulative) to any metric type.
  • Run cross-metric analyses in a single chart instead of switching between Segmentation and User Sessions.

Metric Explorer brings the capabilities of the Segmentation chart and the User Sessions chart into a single chart that supports all metric types. Amplitude offers it as a separate chart in beta so you can validate parity before you adopt it for your everyday analyses.

Before you start

  • Enable sessions for your project. Refer to Track sessions.
  • Hybrid formula metrics combine event and session inputs in one expression. Refer to Hybrid formula metrics for how to add them in Metric Explorer.

Create a Metric Explorer chart

To build a Metric Explorer chart, follow these steps:

  1. Click + New Chart and select Metric Explorer (Beta) from the chart picker.
  2. In the metrics panel, click + Add metric and pick an event, a session metric, a saved metric, or a hybrid formula. You can add multiple metrics of different types to the same chart.
  3. To group your results, click + Group by. When at least one metric on the chart is session-scoped, the group-by selector offers event, session, or chart-level scoping. Refer to Group-by scoping.
  4. To filter the population, add Segments, or pick a saved segment from Segments V2.
  5. Choose a time range and an interval (real-time, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly).
  6. Choose a visualization (line or bar) from the visualization picker.

Supported capabilities

Updated regularly

Amplitude updates this table on the regular release cadence. If a capability isn't listed, treat it as not available and use Segmentation or User Sessions in the meantime.

Not yet supported

Updated regularly

Amplitude updates this list as capabilities ship. Until a capability moves out of this list, use Segmentation or User Sessions for that workflow.

  • Visualizations: stacked area, stacked bar, horizontal bar, pie, KPI
  • Y-axis: custom Y-axis controls
  • Theming: color themes
  • Modeling: QTS (Query Time Sampling), anomaly detection, forecasting
  • Annotations
  • Microscope: view groups, view cohort, journeys, replays
  • Event Explorer
  • Normalize
  • Show SQL
  • Save as metric
  • Export

Group-by scoping

When at least one metric on the chart is session-scoped, the Group by selector offers a scoping control with three options:

  • Event: Amplitude evaluates the group-by on the event row that satisfies the metric.
  • Session: Amplitude evaluates the group-by on the session that contains the event.
  • Chart-level: Amplitude applies the group-by uniformly across all metrics on the chart.

For event-only metrics on a chart that also contains session metrics, scoping defaults to Event. The same scoping rules apply in Metric Explorer as in Data Tables. For the full reference, refer to Use session metrics in Data Tables.

Hybrid Formula metrics

Hybrid Formulas combine event and session inputs in one expression. Metric Explorer is one of the surfaces where Hybrid Formulas work. To add one:

  1. Click + Add metric, then Create metric, then Hybrid Formula.
  2. Add event inputs and session inputs, then write the expression, for example, A / S.
  3. To reuse the metric across other Metric Explorer charts and Data Tables, save it.

For the support matrix, common examples, and the measurement reference, refer to Hybrid Formulas.

FAQ

Do existing Segmentation and User Sessions charts keep working?

Yes. Amplitude offers Metric Explorer as a separate chart, so existing charts and dashboards keep working unchanged.

Can I save a Metric Explorer chart to a dashboard?

Yes. You can save Metric Explorer charts and add them to dashboards, and Metric Explorer supports Replace Events on dashboards.

Can I export a Metric Explorer chart?

Not in the current beta. Use Segmentation or User Sessions if you need to export.

How do I report a bug or request a capability?

Use the in-product feedback widget, or talk to your customer success manager.
