Move from Event Segmentation or User Sessions to Metric Explorer

Metric Explorer is where new event and session analysis starts in Amplitude. It combines Event Segmentation (counting and comparing events) and User Sessions (visit-based metrics) in one chart. Every building block carries over: events, Measured as, segments, group-bys, formulas, and Microscope. The difference is where you set them. In Metric Explorer, each metric has its own measurement, filters, group-bys, and smoothing, instead of one setting for the whole chart.

Existing Event Segmentation and User Sessions charts keep working. You can upgrade any of them to Metric Explorer in place.

Metric Explorer also supports what neither older chart can: several session metrics with different measurements on one chart, session metrics next to event metrics, and hybrid formulas such as revenue per session. For examples, go to Metric Explorer use cases.

Upgrade a chart in place

Upgrade an Event Segmentation or User Sessions chart to keep its link, dashboard placement, and definition while you continue the analysis in Metric Explorer.

  1. Open the Event Segmentation or User Sessions chart.
  2. Click Try Metric Explorer. The button appears in the banner at the top of the chart. After you dismiss the banner, it appears next to the chart type.
  3. Review the converted chart. Each event or session becomes a metric that carries the chart's measurement.
  4. Click Save to replace the saved chart with the Metric Explorer version.

To keep the original chart and open the converted version in a new tab, hold Cmd (Mac), Ctrl (Windows), or Shift while you click Try Metric Explorer.

The upgrade carries over:

  • Measurements, applied to each metric.
  • Filters and group-bys on each event or session.
  • Segments, including Group segment by.
  • Date range and interval.
  • Formulas, which become Metric Explorer formulas. A %: prefix carries over, so percentage formulas still display as percentages.

Create an Event Segmentation or User Sessions chart

Event Segmentation and User Sessions remain available for new charts. Create a chart, click the chart type name, and choose Event Segmentation or User Sessions before you add metrics.
