Quick guide · Session replay

Find funnel friction with Session Replay

5 minutesBeginnerFor PMs & analysts

Your funnel tells you where people drop off. Session Replay shows you why. From any funnel step, watch sessions of people who made it through or people who left.

Why it matters

Why funnels and Session Replay matter

  • Stop guessing why a number changed. Watch the experience behind a drop-off percentage.
  • Fix the right thing first. Watch a few sessions to tell a repeated problem from a one-off.
  • Give your team the same context. Share a replay link so product, design, and engineering can review the same moment.

Questions it answers

Questions Session Replay can answer

  • Why are people abandoning checkout or signup?

Watch people who dropped off at your biggest step. Look for a button that doesn't respond, an error message, or a confusing form.

  • Did your latest release break something?

Watch drop-offs at the same step before and after the release. Look for rage clicks, which are repeated clicks in the same spot. Look for dead clicks, which are clicks on something that does nothing.

  • What do people who buy do differently?

Watch two or three people who converted, meaning they completed the funnel. Then watch two or three who left at the same step. Use the differences to choose your next test.

Start here

Find funnel friction with Session Replay

Start with a funnel you already use, such as Add to Cart, Start Checkout, then Purchase.

  1. 1

    Open your existing funnel

Check that Measured as at the top is set to Conversion. Replays only appear for this measure.

  2. 2

    Choose the biggest drop-off

Click the dropped-off part of the bar at the step where you lose the most people. To compare with people who made it through, click the converted part instead. A small menu opens.

  3. 3

    Open the matching replays

Click Watch Session Replays. The replays show recorded sessions from the people behind that number.

  4. 4

    Watch two or three sessions

Speed up playback and skip quiet moments. Look for a problem that appears more than once: repeated clicks, an error, or someone going back and forth.

  5. 5

    Share what you found

Copy the replay link and send it to the teammate who can fix the problem. Add one sentence: "People drop off at [step] because [what you saw]."

Can't open Watch Session Replays?

If Watch Session Replays is missing or disabled, check that your funnel uses Conversion and a recent date range. Replay availability depends on your organization's retention period. If you still can't open replays, ask your Amplitude admin whether Session Replay is set up for this project.

Use Global Agent to review your funnel

Copy the prompt below, then click Open Amplitude. Open Global Agent and paste the prompt. Replace the bracketed text with details about your business and project.

In [project name], review my existing funnel [saved funnel URL or name] for [date range]. Use the Conversion measure. Find the step with the biggest drop-off. Analyze two or three available replays of people who left at that step, then compare with two or three who made it through. Look for repeated clicks, errors, confusing forms, or people going back and forth. Summarize repeated problems, include replay links as evidence, and suggest one change to test. Draft a message for my team: "People drop off at [step] because [what you saw]." If you can't access the replays, tell me what is missing and how to continue the review myself.
