Read and customize a Metric Explorer chart

A Metric Explorer chart can hold metrics with different units, such as user counts, percentages, durations, and revenue. The visualizations, axes, and table options adapt to the metrics on the chart, so the choices you see depend on which metrics you add.
Choose a visualization
Open the visualization menu above the chart and pick one:
| Visualization | Use it to |
|---|---|
| Line chart | Follow each metric over time. Works with every combination of time-series metrics. |
| Stacked area | Show how series add up to a total over time. |
| Bar chart | Compare values across metrics, segments, or group-by values. |
| Stacked bar | Show how a total splits into parts, per interval. |
| Pie chart | Show each series as a share of the total for the date range. |
| KPI | Show the headline value of each metric as a number, for dashboards and reviews. |
Amplitude offers only the visualizations that fit the metrics on the chart:
- Mixed units: When metrics have different units, for example a count and a percentage, Amplitude offers Line chart, Stacked area, and KPI.
- Pie chart: Amplitude offers a pie chart only when every metric adds up to a meaningful total, such as Event Totals, Total Sessions, property sums, or Revenue. Unique users don't add up, because one user can appear in several series.
- Distributions: Frequency, Distribution of Property Value, and Distribution of Session Length render as a histogram. A distribution metric can't share a chart with other metric types. Amplitude shows "Incompatible metric types" until you move it to its own chart.
Show values or shares of the total
On stacked area and stacked bar charts, switch between # (absolute numbers) and % (% of total). Absolute numbers show each series' own value. % shows each series divided by the sum of all series at that point, so the stack always reaches 100%.
% follows the same rule as pie charts: every metric on the chart must add up to a meaningful total. If one metric doesn't, Amplitude disables the option, and its tooltip reads "% of total is only available for measurements that add up to a meaningful total."
Read the breakdown table
The breakdown table below the chart has one row per series: each metric, for each segment and group-by value. Select or clear rows to choose which series the chart draws. By default, the chart shows the top 10 series; change it with the Top N control above the table.
The row calculation column summarizes each row. Choose Row Average, Row Median, or Row Change. Row Sum appears only when every metric on the chart adds up, for example Event Totals or Total Sessions, so a sum never double-counts unique users.
To download the table, click Export CSV. For sorting, search, and other table controls, go to Review chart data.
Use takeaways
Takeaways above the breakdown table summarize each metric in one number. Choose the takeaway type:
- Current Value: The value at the latest interval, with the change from the start of the range.
- Latest Complete Value: The value at the latest interval that has ended, which leaves out a partial current day, week, or month.
- Overall Values: The value across the whole date range. For counts, this is the total. Charts with session metrics don't offer this takeaway.
- Average Values: The average across the intervals in the range.
- Hide Takeaway: Turns the summary off.
Set up Y-axes
On a line chart, Amplitude places a percentage metric, such as [Amplitude] Bounce Rate, on a right Y-axis and keeps the other metrics on the left. If the chart has no percentage metric, Amplitude places a duration metric, such as Average Session Duration, on the right. Each axis has its own title and number format. Revenue stays on the left axis with counts.
To place metrics on axes yourself, for example revenue next to event counts:
- Open Chart Settings and select Y-Axis settings.
- Click Add Right Y-Axis. A right Y-axis section appears with its own title, range, and unit.
- Under Axis Assignment, set each metric to Left or Right.
- Click Save.
For axis titles, minimum and maximum values, units, and log scale, go to Customize your chart's Y-axis.
Change colors and series labels
- Color theme: Open Chart Settings and select Color Themes, then pick a theme. For organization themes, go to Customize your chart colors.
- Series label: Double-click a series name in the legend and type a new name. The new name appears in the legend and the breakdown table.
