What is a line chart?

A line chart connects data points with a line to show how a value changes across an ordered dimension, almost always time. Each point is one measurement — a day, a week, a month — and the line between points makes the direction and speed of change visible. It is the default chart of product analytics and finance because most of the questions that matter are trend questions: is this number growing, how fast, and did that launch bend the curve.

How to make a line chart

  1. Import your CSV

Drag and drop the file onto this page, browse for it, or paste rows straight from a spreadsheet. The sample data shows the shape: a date column plus one numeric column per series.

  2. Pick the x-axis

The tool auto-detects your date column. Change it in the X-axis dropdown if your file has more than one candidate.

  3. Choose your series

Check up to five numeric columns to plot, each in its own color. Move a series to the right y-axis if its scale dwarfs the others.

  4. Download or embed

Grab a high-resolution PNG or JPG, copy a static HTML embed, or export the data back to CSV.

When to use a line chart

  • Trends over time: weekly active users, revenue by month, daily signups

  • Comparing how several series move together, like traffic by channel

  • Spotting spikes, dips, and inflection points at a glance

When not to: If your x-axis is a set of categories rather than a timeline — channels, plans, teams — a bar chart makes the comparison easier to read.

Charts that update themselves

A chart from a CSV is a snapshot. Amplitude charts read straight from your product’s data — funnels, retention, and trends that stay current without another export. Plans start free.

Frequently asked questions

Drop your CSV on this page, pick the column for the x-axis (usually a date), and check the series you want to plot. The line chart renders instantly and you can download it as a PNG or JPG.
Yes, up to five series at once, each in its own color. You can also move a series to a secondary right y-axis when the scales are very different.
Yes. The Advanced section has rolling average and rolling sum transforms with a configurable window, plus a cumulative view for running totals.
Nothing — they are two names for the same chart. This tool makes both, and the download works the same whichever you call it.
They do not have to be, but be aware of how it renders: each row becomes one evenly spaced point along the x-axis, labeled with your date. So a gap of one day and a gap of one month look identical on the chart. If the real spacing matters, fill in the missing periods as rows with zero or blank values.
No. The CSV is read and plotted by your own browser, so the numbers behind your trend line never reach Amplitude or any server. Closing the tab is all the cleanup there is.

Why use this chart maker

Create beautiful charts instantly

Every chart is drawn in Amplitude’s own palette and typography, the same ones behind our product. There is no theme to choose and no colors to adjust, so your data looks presentable the moment it lands.

No signup or account needed

There is no signup, no login, and no paywall. Your CSV is parsed and charted entirely in your browser, so nothing is ever uploaded to Amplitude or saved on our side. You can chart data you would never paste into a website.

Download or embed on the spot

Take a high-resolution PNG or JPG for a deck, the cleaned CSV, or a self-contained HTML snippet that drops into a doc or wiki. One click, no export queue.

Your data carries over, so switching type costs you nothing — no re-importing. Every chart below is drawn by the same tool, in Amplitude’s palette.

  • Area chart

A line chart with the space under it filled in. Good when the volume itself matters, not just the direction.

  • Stacked area chart

Shows how parts add up to a whole over time, like traffic by channel or revenue by plan.

  • Bar chart

Compares amounts across categories. The right pick when your x-axis is a set of things, not a timeline.

  • Stacked bar chart

Category totals plus what each one is made of, in a single chart.

  • Horizontal bar chart

A bar chart turned sideways. Use it for rankings or when category names are too long to fit under columns.

  • Pie chart

Share of a total at a single point in time. Works best with five or fewer slices, so this pie chart generator groups the rest into “Other” for you.

  • Donut chart

A pie chart with an open center. Same job as a pie, with a lighter look.

  • Funnel chart

Drop-off across sequential steps, like visit, signup, activation, purchase. The classic product analytics view.

  • KPI chart

Turns each series into a headline number with its total and average, for when the figure matters more than the trend.
