At Amplitude, our Digital Analytics Platform enables companies to build better products. What's the power behind our products? Our people!
In our Meet the Ampliteer series, we amplify their stories and honor their achievements in shaping data-driven success.
This series installment spotlights Bethany Mangan, solutions engineer and recent winner of Amplitude’s Values Award for Ownership.
Tell us about yourself, your role at Amplitude, and your personal journey that brought you to where you are today.
My name is Bethany and I live in the DC area with my husband, Ian, and two cats, Toby and Archie. I love to cook and bake, and I spend much of my free time finding new ways to be active—rock climbing, pilates, weight lifting, and taking the road bikes out for a spin!
I’ve lived in the Mid-Atlantic area my whole life and went to school for Economics and International Studies. I started working in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and began working in the tech industry on a data science team. I loved using data to solve complex problems but always wanted to work more directly with customers. That’s how I found the solutions engineering role. Working at Amplitude perfectly combines my data analytics skills and love of helping customers solve complex problems.
Toby and Archie: the purrfect companions for a productive workday.
How does your work contribute to Amplitude’s mission of helping companies build better products and experiences? Can you tell us about a project you're particularly proud of?
I’m in the most fun position (and not biased at all) to build technically centered relationships with my customers. It's gratifying to help empower them to tackle the most pressing challenges they face when it comes to accessing more trusted data, clearer and more self-service insights, and faster action to build better products. There is something special about seeing each customer I work with drive significant growth in their business by partnering with Amplitude—and it's a privilege to get to be part of that journey!
At Amplitude, we value humility, ownership, and a growth mindset. How do these values shape your approach to work?
Amplitude’s values stood out to me even in the hiring process because they align very closely with my personal core values. As such, they are pretty foundational to how I show up in the world and at work. They play an important role in the sales and account teams because it's such a collaborative process—and approaching that collaboration from these core values helps us all go further together.
One of the exciting parts of this role is that we’re constantly faced with new challenges and areas to learn. Every customer's tech stack is different, and we need to deeply understand their situation before proposing a solution. Admitting when you don’t know something, having the growth mindset to learn more every day, and taking ownership to teach yourself or recruit the necessary stakeholders into the conversation makes a huge difference.
We admire Ampliliteers who go above and beyond for our customers and the business. What inspires you to be extraordinary in your role at Amplitude?
The Solutions Engineering (SE) team at Amplitude inspires me every single day. We have extraordinary leadership that continually sets the bar high and helps us achieve more, and we have a team filled with diverse experiences and backgrounds. The SE leaders are great examples of leading with our core values at the forefront of their work and can get in the weeds with us during sales cycles.
My teammates exemplify our core values regularly, and we lean on each other's areas of expertise to continually learn and uplevel our skills. For example, Jorge Dorantes has started leading workshops across the team to practice using our various data ingestion methods. Michael Clair is always willing to walk through a customer’s architecture and brainstorm areas of opportunity and efficiency with you. And of course, Audrey Xu is such a shining example of this because she never hesitates to go deep on a specific topic with you and collaborate to troubleshoot the most complicated issues. I’m fortunate to get to work with such brilliant and talented people.
High-performing teams are a hallmark of Amplitude's culture. Can you highlight a colleague or team that exemplifies our commitment to excellence?
Becca Abu Sharkh is the perfect example of someone committed to excellence. I have always admired her spirit of ownership and the ways she goes above and beyond in everything she does. Fun fact: Becca and I worked together at our last company, and I originally got into the solutions engineering field after speaking with her about her daily work. She has made a real impact on my life and inspires me daily! I’m fortunate to get to keep working with her here at Amplitude.
Working at Amplitude often changes the way we view digital products and experiences. Can you share a product that continues to delight you or you can't live without?
I recently had the opportunity to work with the fantastic team at InKind, the app that enables users to pre-pay at their favorite restaurants and earn bonus dining credits and other perks. I had just discovered their app the week before getting their request for a demo of Amplitude, so it was perfect timing. Now, I use the app all the time. Not only do we get to partner with some awesome folks in product, design, and data science there, but the company’s mission and the benefits it provides for everyone are special. I love how easy it is to pay at restaurants (something I already do regularly), the rewards I get in return, and how it helps people support local businesses. My family and friends are on the app now and loving it!
