We sat down with Andrew, who shared his journey as a CFO and the principles shaping his leadership approach. Learn about his commitment to fostering collaboration and driving impactful change and how Amplitude empowers teams to achieve financial and strategic excellence.

What is the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I’ve received is to continuously ask myself, “What are the core tasks I need to excel at, and how can I execute them efficiently?” Once I have clarity on that, the focus shifts to pushing boundaries—expanding the scope of what the role entails and how I can better influence and create greater value beyond the designated scope.

A lot of that comes with working seamlessly across organizational boundaries. While some might advocate for staying in our lanes, I see those lanes as dotted lines, not double yellow lines. It’s crucial to figure out how to collaborate effectively, transforming rigid processes into fluid ones. Instead of hard stops between teams and departments, we should aim for flexibility and cohesion, ensuring we work together to improve outcomes.

What skill or trait do you value most at work?

I value the ability to empathize with the customer and collaborate across functional areas. The customer has to be our North Star when we develop products and deliver value. Equally, it’s important to have a strong business context and understand the challenges other teams face—whether that’s marketing, sales, IT, or product development. The better you understand the challenges, the more effectively you can collaborate with others to drive the right outcomes.

What’s your best advice for managers?

My best advice for managers is to leave their egos at the door and focus on listening and learning. Take the time to understand the full context and invite diverse perspectives. Patience and active listening are essential for being effective. When you prioritize understanding and create space for input, you empower your team to deliver their best work, resulting in better decisions and stronger outcomes.

What is a piece of tough feedback you’ve received?

In the past, I received feedback about my approach to driving change. I pushed for change too quickly, implementing multiple initiatives without giving the organization enough time to adjust. As a result, we didn’t achieve the progress I’d envisioned—we moved slower and less effectively than planned.

Every leader wants to move faster through change, often because they’re focused on the benefits, outcomes, and what’s possible. However, I’ve learned that the results are less impactful than expected without ensuring people understand the path forward—including the key milestones, the steps needed to achieve the outcome, and what’s required of them to succeed.

Clear guidance, like breadcrumbs along the path, is critical. It helps ensure everyone is aligned and able to contribute effectively to the change process, making the outcome more successful and impactful.

What’s your favorite part about working at Amplitude, and why should someone join the company?

I love it when everyone is in the office. The energy, the vibe, and the organic interactions that happen throughout the day are truly special. I’m a firm believer in the Peter Drucker approach to management—walking around, talking to people, and getting feedback. Some of the most valuable conversations happen spontaneously, like in the break area, and those moments are hard to replicate over Zoom. These interactions foster a sense of connection and remind us that we’re all part of one team. While remote work has its benefits, I love the opportunities to build those relationships in person.

If you want to be part of something special and help create something iconic, Amplitude is the right place for you. We’re on a mission to build better products and are looking for people excited to contribute to that journey. This isn’t just a job–it’s a chance to join a team that’s driven, collaborative, and dedicated to making an impact.
