A Go report assistant can read account data and explain it in the same backend that serves your product. Amplitude agent analytics connects its tool calls, model responses, and completed work to the users in your existing product analytics.
In this tutorial, you'll extend the Go report app with a complete assistant job, track its real report read and model call, record token usage and latency, and close the session when the work finishes.
POST /api/assistant/jobs starts one report-explanation job for the signed-in user. The application reads that user's CSV usage data, calls the OpenAI Responses API, and returns an answer with a job ID. Amplitude receives [Agent] User Message, [Agent] Tool Call, [Agent] AI Response, and [Agent] Session End with shared identity and metadata.
Prerequisites
- The Go 1.27 report app from the Go product analytics and feature flags tutorials. Keep its six root files:
analytics.go,auth.go,reports.go,server.go,flags.go, andflag_reports.go. The complete entry point below retains both report routes and an existing flag deployment. - Your real authentication middleware, which calls
WithVerifiedUseronly after verifying the user. The assistant requires a signed-in user and keeps report authorization in the application. - The existing Amplitude project API key and a server-controlled CSV usage export with
user_id,date,event_countcolumns. The CSV user ID must match your canonical authenticated user ID. - An OpenAI API key and a text model enabled for your account's Responses API. Provider billing applies to model requests; keep that key in the server environment.
Sign up for an Amplitude account to get a project API key.
1. Keep the Go SDK and choose the job boundary
I'll emit the managed agent event taxonomy with the same standard SDK the backend already uses. The direct-instrumentation guide describes this path for Go.
Terminal
go get github.com/amplitude/analytics-go@v1.3.1
mkdir -p cmd/agent dataEach request to this endpoint starts a genuinely new, synchronous report job. Its server-generated job ID becomes the agent session ID and stays the same through the tool read, model response, and close. The job has one user-message exchange, so every event carries Turn ID 1 and one trace ID.
A chat uses a different boundary: keep its persisted thread ID across messages and increment the turn once per exchange. Do not adapt this job endpoint into a chat by issuing a new session ID for every message. If your app already has report-job records, use their IDs and ownership checks instead of creating a second identifier.
This example applies metadata_only behavior to Amplitude events. It omits message text, system prompts, tool inputs and outputs, score comments, and raw errors. The provider still receives the question and filtered report data to produce an answer. Configure that provider relationship according to your application's existing data policy.
2. Emit metadata for the job
I'll create one run object per job and attach its shared fields to each event. All identity comes from the verified request; the analytics visit session ID remains -1 because this example does not forward a browser visit ID.

}Each logical event gets a unique InsertID when it is created. The SDK can retry that event with its identifier retained. An application-level retry of a persisted job needs its own durable event identifiers so it does not create a second logical event.
The tool event references the triggering user message. The model response records the provider's actual model name, token usage when available, and measured model-call latency. Cost is omitted here: direct ingestion does not calculate it from tokens. Add [Agent] Cost USD only when your application has a verified cost for that call, and keep it on the AI Response event.
Why. A process-wide run object can attach one user's events to another user's job. This object belongs to one unit of work, and every event supplies its own user and device identity to the shared analytics client.
3. Read the signed-in user's report
The application always reads the report before calling the model. This is a fixed report workflow: the model explains the supplied data and does not choose another account or file. The tool filters rows using the verified user ID, and its output contains only the seven-day totals.

report.ActiveDays = len(active)
return report, nil
}The window includes today and the preceding six UTC dates. The tool checks the CSV shape, dates, and nonnegative counts, and bounds the file and row count. Keep the path under server control. For production, use your account-scoped usage export or replace this function with your authorized report query while retaining the same telemetry boundary.
To make a small local input file, use the canonical ID your application supplies after sign-in:
Terminal
export REPORT_USER_ID='your-existing-user-id'
printf 'user_id,date,event_count\n%s,%s,8\n' \
"$REPORT_USER_ID" "$(date -u +%F)" > data/usage.csvThis creates sample report data for that user. It does not create an account or authenticate a request. The report is read by real application code; the model's answer comes from the provider call in the next step.
4. Call the model and close the job
I'll call the Responses API with the filtered report and question, then read text from the assistant's output items. The adapter keeps raw provider errors out of responses and telemetry and uses an eight-second request deadline.

}This sends one provider request per job after a successful report read. The model may return reasoning or other output items before its text, so the adapter searches the output array for assistant message text. It records the canonical model name from the response and maps the provider's input, output, and total token fields without counting the displayed text itself.
Missing or inconsistent usage stays absent; the helper does not manufacture zero tokens. Provider failure records an error response event with latency and the requested model name, without inventing usage or copying an error body. A tool failure records its failed invocation and closes the job without pretending a model call happened.
store: false disables storing the generated response for later retrieval through the provider API. It is not a claim about every provider retention policy. The API reference describes the request and usage fields.
The handler closes this job after the final response write or after a known failure. A failed response write leaves the job outcome as failed, while a successful model call still retains its own metrics. It does not close a continuing conversation after an arbitrary HTTP request.
MCP. Ask your coding agent to inspect your project's context and event taxonomy through Amplitude MCP. Keep business actions in your normal product taxonomy and use the managed [Agent] names for agent activity.
5. Add the assistant route
The complete example keeps the report preview and export routes, uses the flagged preview when a deployment key is configured, and adds the assistant endpoint to the same mux. Merge it with your existing authentication and application routes.
cmd/agent/main.go
// Keep verified auth, feature flags, application routes and shutdown hooks.
package main
import (
"context"
"log"
"os"
"os/signal"
"syscall"
hub "example.com/amplitude-build-go"
)
func main() {
analytics, err := hub.NewAnalytics(os.Getenv("AMPLITUDE_API_KEY"), os.Getenv("AMPLITUDE_SERVER_ZONE"))
if err != nil {
log.Fatal(err)
}
agent, err := hub.NewReportAgent(analytics, os.Getenv("OPENAI_API_KEY"), os.Getenv("OPENAI_MODEL"), os.Getenv("APP_ENV"), os.Getenv("REPORT_DATA_PATH"))
if err != nil {
analytics.Close()
log.Fatal(err)
}
mux := hub.NewRouter(analytics, nil)
// Retain the flagged preview when the earlier page's deployment is configured.
if key := os.Getenv("AMPLITUDE_DEPLOYMENT_KEY"); key != "" {
flags, err := hub.NewReportFlags(key, os.Getenv("AMPLITUDE_SERVER_ZONE"))
if err != nil {
analytics.Close()
log.Fatal(err)
}
mux = hub.NewRouter(analytics, hub.FlagPreviewHandler(analytics, flags))
}
mux.Handle("POST /api/reports/export", hub.ExportHandler(analytics))
// Wrap this mux with your existing verified authentication middleware.
mux.Handle("POST /api/assistant/jobs", agent.Handler())
ctx, stop := signal.NotifyContext(context.Background(), os.Interrupt, syscall.SIGTERM)
defer stop()
if err := hub.Serve(ctx, "127.0.0.1:8080", mux, analytics); err != nil {
log.Print(err)
}
}Keep your verified authentication middleware around this mux. The standalone entry point deliberately has no fake sign-in: the assistant route returns 401 until your real middleware supplies a user. A user ID in JSON or an unverified header cannot select a report owner.
Run this entry point after stopping the earlier local server on port 8080. Set the keys and model your application uses; the model value below is an example from the provider's current text-generation guide.
Terminal
go mod tidy
export AMPLITUDE_API_KEY='your-project-api-key'
export AMPLITUDE_SERVER_ZONE=US
export OPENAI_API_KEY='your-server-provider-key'
export OPENAI_MODEL='gpt-6-astra'
export APP_ENV=development
export REPORT_DATA_PATH="$PWD/data/usage.csv"
go run ./cmd/agentUse EU for an EU Amplitude project and keep AMPLITUDE_DEPLOYMENT_KEY in the environment if the report app already uses flags. The process reads these variables directly and does not load a .env file. It still drains active handlers before closing the shared analytics client. A forced process termination or failed delivery can lose queued events.
Verify it worked
Send a request through your application's authenticated client. Supply its existing session cookie or authorization token through your usual request flow, and ask for an explanation of the report.
Request JSON
{"prompt":"Explain my usage over the last seven days."}- Confirm the assistant returns an answer and a
job_id. The model should receive only the signed-in user's aggregate report, not another account's rows or the full export. An unverified request must receive401before tool or model work. - Let the analytics batch send or stop the server gracefully. In Users > User Profiles, find the same canonical user ID and inspect the agent events' Raw fields. A successful job has User Message, Tool Call, AI Response, and Session End in that order.
- Check that all four events share the returned job/session ID, Turn ID
1, trace ID, stablego-report-assistantagent ID, environment, andgoruntime. Check the tool's invocation and parent-message IDs, the response's real model/provider, and provider-reported usage and latency. - Confirm message text, system prompts, tool inputs and outputs, and error bodies are absent from Amplitude events. The answer returned to the authenticated caller can contain text; the metadata-only analytics events do not.
- Inspect the job in agent analytics after Amplitude processes it. An ingestion
200alone does not prove correct grouping. Session Records normally appear about 15 to 20 minutes after explicit closure, with longer waits possible when enrichment is backed up. Content-based signals have no text to score in metadata-only mode. - Test tool failure, provider failure, canceled requests, and concurrent users in development. Each completed or failed job must close under its own ID. Verify missing cost remains unknown rather than appearing as a free call; this example supplies no cost estimate.
Troubleshooting
The assistant always returns 401
Your verified authentication middleware has not supplied a valid user through WithVerifiedUser. The device header is analytics metadata and does not authenticate a caller. Keep the same canonical user ID used by product analytics and the report export.
The model explains an empty report
Check that the CSV user ID exactly matches the verified account, the dates fall within the current seven UTC dates, and REPORT_DATA_PATH points to the intended server-owned file. A user with no matching rows has zero usage.
The response succeeds but the agent session is missing
Check the Amplitude project, data residency, and event delivery. Every event needs the same real job/session ID and stable Agent ID. Receipt by the HTTP API is separate from agent processing.
The session has no message text or quality score
This integration intentionally omits content from Amplitude events. Metadata-only sessions support the telemetry that does not need text; content-based signals cannot infer quality from token counts alone.
Cost is missing or usage looks incomplete
Direct ingestion stores the cost you supply and does not price the call. This example omits cost. Token fields also stay absent when the provider does not return a valid usage object; inspect the provider response in a safe development environment instead of substituting zeros.
Frequently asked questions
Is the job ID the same as the analytics session ID?
The agent job/session ID identifies this unit of work. The ordinary analytics visit ID serves a different purpose. This example leaves ordinary server events outside a visit with SessionID: -1.
Can I use this for a conversation?
Keep the event helper pattern, but persist the real conversation ID, verify its owner on every request, and increment its turn counter once per exchange. Close it when the conversation ends. This endpoint creates a new job because each request asks it to complete a separate report task.
Does metadata-only mode prevent the model from receiving the question?
The question and filtered report go to the configured model provider. Metadata-only behavior here controls what the application sends to Amplitude. It does not change the provider's input or its data policy.
Do I need to flush after every event?
The shared Go client batches events. Keep the existing process shutdown lifecycle, allowing active jobs to finish before calling the SDK's shutdown method. Use a durable event pipeline when events must survive process loss.

Use https://amplitude.com/build/go-agent-analytics to instrument this Go report
assistant. Reuse the standard Analytics Go SDK client and preserve verified auth,
authorization, report routes, optional flags and drain-before-close shutdown.
Use the existing real job ID for one unit of work; if implementing a chat instead,
persist its thread ID and owner across requests and increment turns per exchange.
Emit User Message, one Tool Call for each real invocation, AI Response for the
actual model call, and Session End only when the job finishes. Every event needs
Session ID, Turn ID, Trace ID, Agent ID, Env, Runtime, canonical user identity and
a unique logical-event InsertID. Use the same trace for one exchange. Record actual
provider model, usage and latency. Keep tokens and any known cost on AI Response
only; omit unknown cost and usage rather than inventing zero. Apply metadata-only
gating before Track, including raw errors and all content-bearing channels.
Keep the report owner and file/query under server control. Test real tool reads,
provider HTTP parsing, privacy, failure, cancellation, concurrent users and combined
report/flag routes. Verify Amplitude grouping and enrichment separately from HTTP
receipt. Report exact changes, tests and any remaining verification limits.What this unlocks
Agent analytics groups the report tool and model call under one completed job, with token usage, latency, and technical failure data.
Product analytics uses the same canonical user ID to connect the assistant's work with Report Previewed and Report Exported in the report app.
Feature flags keep the report experience configurable while the assistant route shares the existing application's identity and lifecycle.
