The problem with metrics today

Digital analytics and experimentation is all about quantifying your impact with metrics. But what happens if your teams don't have a shared understanding of what those metrics mean?

Say you’re a digital marketer who defines conversion events based on landing page clicks. But your counterpart in growth marketing defines conversions as landing page interactions plus sign-ups. Both of you could be looking at conversion rate funnels, yet arrive at completely different insights about performance and how to drive your business forward.

Without centralized definitions, visibility, and governance of the metrics that matter most to your business, it’s impossible to be sure that what an active user looks like or what a conversion event represents gets applied consistently across your charts, experiments, and business decisions. You’re stuck with miscommunications, unclear insights, and no way to act with conviction.

That’s why we decided to build a way to clear all that up.

Reimagining the metrics experience

Amplitude has redesigned our approach to defining metrics across our digital analytics platform, consolidating it into a single, centralized experience. This new approach ensures all of your teams share the same understanding of your critical metrics: how they’re defined, how they’re used across the platform, and any modifications to these definitions over time.

Here’s what’s new:

  • A Centralized Home for Metrics: Quickly see and manage your metrics in one intuitive location.
  • Shared and Trustworthy Definitions: Metrics are reusable across charts, dashboards, and experiments, ensuring consistent interpretation and usage (especially for the “official” ones marked by admins).
  • Easy Experimentation: Use any metric as the success measure for web or feature experimentation. Amplitude will keep a record of all the ongoing and historical experiments running against every metric with its correlated impact.
  • Better Governance: A rich activity log captures every change to a metric’s definition so downstream users get notified of important changes. Usage metadata helps identify which metrics are being used.

Putting your metrics into action

Insights are great, but action is where impact happens. With a new single source of truth for metrics, you can shift from worrying about how they're defined to realizing what you can do with them.

Metrics in Amplitude now go beyond just monitoring performance—they’re built for momentum, and you can use them to drive growth outcomes across the platform.

From any metric, you can instantly:

  • Investigate what caused metric fluctuations with key properties
  • Visualize how users interact with the metric through Session Replay
  • Launch an experiment to move the metric’s needle
  • Build targeted in-app guides that trigger off the metric
  • Create cohorts to activate the metric across your messaging, engagement tools, and broader ecosystem

And then, of course, you can also be certain of the impact your efforts have because of that single source of truth. Just like that, the gap between insight and action disappears.

A look at the future of metrics

Centralized metrics, better governance, and easy access to actionable workflows will significantly enhance your development cycles—and we’re even more excited about what's coming next.

Soon, you’ll be able to define clear targets for all of your key metrics, keeping teams accountable to hitting their goals. Amplitude will give visibility to whether you're on or off track and recommend actions that can help you achieve your goals and go beyond.

The metrics homepage will also start to work as an executive-level view into the entire organization’s performance. Next to every metric, users can see their metrics’ current value and the defined targets, color-coded to indicate status. With just a glance, leaders can assess the health and performance of their organization.

We’re also making it easier to use metrics at scale, from an overhaul of the metric creation UX to the ability to copy metrics across many data projects at once.
